I think I love teaching photography as much I love shooting. Sharing what you know with others is what I love to do....and there is so much to know about photography and Photoshop. Learning never ends.....

ONLINE CLASS AT BPSOP.com: 

Eye to Eye: Capturing the Face 

This is my portrait photography class at BPSOP.com, the Bryan Peterson School of Photography, which is the best online photography school in the world. The class is four weeks long with assignments given out each week and lots of Q&A and interaction with all of the other students. People sign up from every corner of the world and this is a great way to learn about many aspects of creating portraits! 

 

CLASSES AT UCLA EXTENSION: 

 

Eye to Eye; Capturing the Face 

November 18th, 2017 

This one day course will take the mystery out of creating beautiful portraits indoors and outdoors, in all kinds of lighting conditions. Topics will include composition, poses, working with light, locations, clothes, props, choosing the right gear, capturing people while traveling and more. The course will also dive into the correct camera settings for different situations and how to achieve desired effects from your camera. All kinds of lighting gear will be shown from flash to reflectors and diffusers to portable soft boxes and radio transmitters. There will also be live demonstrations indoors and outside to show how to use certain gear to create the look you want to achieve. The importance of Photoshop in the portrait workflow will also be covered, showing techniques and retouching methods to push your photographs to the next level. 

 

Photoshop Tips, Tricks, and Filter Magic 

March 5th, 2016 

This is one of my favorite classes to teach and we spend the whole day covering some of the best Photoshop techniques for improving your photos. We cover everything from actions, to speediing up your workflow, the best tools to use, my favorite plug-ins, retouching techniques and so much more. A great class to show you how the pros make their images look the way they do. 

 

Travel Photography Workshop 

May 9th, 2015 

This one-day workshop provides the insights needed to create one-of-a-kind images while traveling. Instruction will include examples of travel photography from all over the world and explaining my thought process and workflow from beginning to end. Other topics include essential gear, great travel destinations, how to prepare ideas and do research, logistics, capturing people while you travel, and critiquing your work. Instruction will also cover the importance of post-processing where I will show some useful tips and techniques using Photoshop. Students will leave the class ready to capture more compelling and creative images. Internet access required to retrieve course materials.  

 

Photoshop Portrait Retouching Workshop 

November 22, 2014 

Photoshop is a photographer's best friend, and retouching in Photoshop is a skill that can benefit all kinds of photographers. This hands-on workshop focuses on some of the best tools and techniques to fix and improve any kind of portrait. Learn the advantages of working in .RAW; why layer masks are the key to retouching; how to remove wrinkles and blemishes, smooth out skin and get good skin color, reshape the nose, whiten teeth, add highlights to the hair, dodge and burn effectively; and more. Each student has his/her own computer workstation and works on images with the instructor. By the end of the course, learn how to enhance portraits without revealing that they were retouched in Photoshop.

"Afterglow" Shooting After Dark 

The Sedona Art Center in Sedona 

June 26th and 27th, 2017 

From dusk till dawn, the darkness can reveal a world filled with mystery and wonder. Photographic possibilities become endless when imagination and knowledge collide after dark. Movement, color and light combine to give results that are often unseen with the naked eye. Longer shutter speeds can produce imposing cobalt blue skies, surreal car trails and star trails, one of a kind silhouettes and gorgeous motion blurs, electrifying lightning and of course the awe inspiring Milky Way Galaxy. 

SEDONA PhotoFest 201

The Nude in the Landscape May 5th, 2015 

In this unique workshop, instruction will emphasize how creating the right dynamic between model and photographer can produce timeless images. Composition, locations and lighting will take center stage with each student trying to capture their own vision. The workshop will be held outdoors in the beauty of Sedona, in various locations that are private, along the river and among the amazing red rocks and foliage of Sedona. 

The Art of Travel Photography  

A PhotoFest 2015 Seminar May 3rd, 2015 

This 2 hour seminar is designed to provide you many insights needed to create great travel images and become a better travel photographer. You will learn how to push your digital photography well beyond capturing ordinary snapshots with just a point-and-shoot approach. Throughout the seminar, Scott will show many examples of travel photography from all over the world and explain his thought process and workflow from beginning to end. The emphasis will be on how to create more compelling images and how to push yourself to think differently.

Sedona PhotoFest 2015 Workshop 

May 6, 2015 

Photoshop is a photographers best friend and this one day workshop is designed for photographers of any level who would like to broaden their understanding of this amazing program. From the subtle nuances or powerful aspects of working in camera raw to the dreamlike and ethereal quality achievable by converting images to black and white or sepia, the demonstration day in the classroom will help open your eyes to the possibilities of what you can achieve with postprocessing, using Photoshop. 

This one day workshop includes demonstration, lecture and Question and Answer of Photoshop & the Raw workflow, layers and layer masks, retouching techniques, HDR and much more. Instruction will cover the digital workflow using the three components of the program; Bridge, Camera Raw and Photoshop and will focus on the importance of working in raw. Demonstrations will cover how to process, adjust, correct, and manipulate captured images, including different techniques to work on images from the previous days “Nude in the Landscape” workshop. 

 

SEDONA PhotoFest 2014 

LightPainting, HDR, models, landscape & more at Gold King Mine June 7 & 8, 2014 

This two-day workshop will take place at the one-of-a-kind Gold King Mine in the city of Jerome and also at Yavapai College and will focus on capturing this unique junkyard during the afternoon and also after dark. This old ghost town has a rustic assortment of ramshackle buildings, hundreds of vintage cars and trucks, an old mine shaft and a sprawling array of rusted machinery that forever teeters between ruin and redemption. It is an amazing location for photography and especially HDR. 

There will also be models for this workshop and Scott will show how to capture this unique location with and without models as the photographic possibilities are endless in this special place. Using the bright light of the afternoon, Scott will go over how important bracekting is and why HDR is critical for many shots. He will also teach how to photograph the models in different settings at the mine using different techniques and equipment. 

Travel and Portraiture Workshop at the Sedona Arts Center 

June 7 & 8, 2013 

This two day workshop in the gorgeous city of Sedona, Arizona will explore techniques to capture better travel photography & more dynamic portraits whether at home or abroad. We will cover locations, lighting, composition, lens choices, distracting elements and more. Using models, the class will use various techniques for photographing people while traveling and also how to capture intimate portraits in unique and powerful ways.

Photoshop is a photographers best friend and this hands on workshop is designed for photographers of any level who would like to broaden their understanding of this amazing program. Instruction will cover the digital workflow using the three components of the program; Bridge, Camera Raw and Photoshop and will focus on the importance of working in raw. Lectures and exercises cover how to process, adjust, correct, and manipulate captured images. A variety of tools and techniques including some of the best Photoshop plugins will be explored to transform images into the desired outcome, and give a complete understanding of this powerful program. The course ends with a raffle where students have the chance to win their own copy of some of the plug-ins demonstrated in class. 

Afterglow: Shooting after Dark 

September 7th and 14th, 2013 

From dusk till dawn, the darkness can reveal a world filled with mystery and wonder. Photographic possibilities become endless when imagination and knowledge collide after dark. Longer shutter speeds can produce imposing cobalt blue skies, surreal car trails and star trails, one of a kind silhouettes and gorgeous motion blurs. Movement, color and light combine to give results that are often unseen with the naked eye. The morning classroom session will cover evaluating existing lighting situations, composition, understanding time exposures, camera set ups, light painting and scouting locations. Photoshop techniques will also be discussed to highlight the importance of post processing your images from after dark in different ways. The evening seesion will be a hands on workshop from dusk till after dark in one or two locations in Sedona which with hands on instruction to help students capture the beauty of after dark. Previsualizing the final image, students will use different techniques learned in class to produce one of a kind images. 

Students are expected to be familiar with their camera gear and with basic photographic techniques. A tripod and cable release is also required for this class. An LED headlamp is also a great idea. 

 

Having moved with my fiancé to Sedona, Arizona in late 2011...I am teachng fewer classes than I was in LA.

Shooting after the sun goes down is one of my favorite parts of photography for as long as I can remember. This class is an intense week of learning the ins and outs of shooting after dark. Classroom sessions will cover evaluating existing lighting situations, composition, understanding time exposures, camera set ups, light painting and scouting locations. Classroom time during the day is in the studio and then we leave each night well before dusk for different locations around Los Angeles. This is probably my favorite photography class to teach as I just love shooting after dark.
